Bzz Agent Review: Playtex Secrets® Balconette bra

Don’t you hate when you see an amazing looking bra but alas it just doesn’t fit well? That was the case here with the new Playtex Secrets Balconette bra that I received from BzzAgent (Thanks guys!)  At first sight, here were my first thoughts about the bra.

Playtex Balconet Bra

Playtex Balconet Bra

Pros

  • Amazing full cups enough that your breasts wouldn’t runneth over,
  • Enough lining so that your headlights stay covered, and
  • Thick enough straps that you’d feel supported at all times.

Then I put it on and  reality hit me in a not so good way, it just didn’t fit right. Here is what happen.

Cons

  • The bra didn’t lay flat in the middle about 1/2 an inch off
  • It kept riding up the entire time. It was so bad that other people noticed how uncomfortable I was and said that bra isn’t for you.

Merli says: Unfortunately while the bra seems well made and has promise maybe to hold someone else’s girls in place in a sexy and supportive way, the bra failed to keep my girls and me happy. I say leave it alone.

Grade: C+

She Did That! Estelle in Edmundo Castillo

Estelle wearing a Sally LaPointe dress and Edmundo Castillo shoes to Kevin Liles’ birthday party last night in NYC, gave me absolute new life. Love the shape of these wedge like phonemes and absolutely need them in my little fashionista life.

What do you think of the ensemble and the new hair?

Estelle looking fabulous but do you miss her short hair?

Up Close and Personal With Taren Guy

The term “Nappy” what does it mean to you?

I feel like where was the word derived from, where did it come from.we know it was meant to be a negative term. Even though we have proud to be  naturals who come out

_DSC0075now and say “Happy to be nappy!” I feel like just thee, from the original intent of the word it makes you cringe for a reason because you feel it there is a stigma attached to it. It’s going to be hard to separate that at this point, while I can hear the girls say I’m happy to be nappy, when a guy says I love your nappy hair…. how about let me call my own hair nappy. Whether its contradictory or not its just the way it is.

Do you think that men have caught on to the natural hair movement or are they still pro perm hair?

I feel like they are catching on. I feel like they are a few who were already on even within the black community itself. A lot of people say the white guys they’ve always loved our hair. Most black guys have been a little slow to catch on but I do feel like its a different kind of black guy that appreciates it and its just what it is. They can be either very cultured… I don’t want to put a stereotype on “That Guy” but you know what I mean, like that guy I don’t want to say who is burning incense, creating music and painting. But seriously he is that guy into all that stuff. And then there is the other guy who is very industry, very pretentious, and its all about the video models and gucci and their appreciation (for us) is gone. Its just a different kind of guy and race has nothing to do with it.

Love Melody Ehsani earrings!

What was your proudest “Natural” Moment?

I have two, my first one was when I did the big chop in the middle of my natural hair journey. It wasn’t to go natural but simply I’m getting rid of this long hair because its damaged and I’m ready to start fresh, and really take care of it;  the way I want to take care of it.  Just to make that decision was serious because I was very attached to my length, that was a big move for me. And the second time As my hair started growing not fretting over my curls being perfect cause that was definitely me. If you watched my videos pre-big chop it was all about the kinky curly custard, and define this, and this curl is out of place. The appreciation for my hair really grew after the big chop. So now I’m in a very carefree space and I love it. Those two are big for me.

Any tips or suggestions for the current naturals who are ready to go back to the “White Crack”?

Ooooh! Who are ready to go back? I feel like they didn’t go back (to natural) for the right reasons then. Those People who go natural make that decision because it is a trend its so shallow that any little thing will make them go back (to natural) but when you do it for a deeper reason  and more like self acceptance and I don’t care I want to be me then you’ll stay. Its just as simple as that, cause a lot of people like to jump on bandwagons and then they just jump right off.

Wow!

Wow!

After our interview Taren would face a sold out crowd at The Harlem School of the Arts, packed with naturals from all over, even international as far as London. They were all ready to hear the amazing panel that included, Dickey Founder and Creative Director of Hair Rules and Michaela Angela Davis, Image Activist and Editorial Brand Manager at BET, Nakesha Smith youtube natural hair vlogger, as well as other naturals hand-picked from the audience.

The Panel

The Panel Taren, Dickey, Michaela, Nakeisha, and three audience members

It was a sight to be seen over a hundred natural haired women and there were a handful of men as well all celebrating and learning about who we are… naturally.

The crowd was packed out. Now that's love.

Brandon Sun NYFW Fall 2013

Boho chic got a modern twist at the Brandon Sun fashion show, Elizabeth Arden and Red Door created the easy breezy look. Master stylist Zahir Ziani created a chic bohemian bun using the Resistance Double Force by Kerastase (one of my fave hair products) to create a firm but sexy bedroom hair.  For makeup the focus were bold and dark brows think Beyonce’ with dewy skin and a matte lip. A great everyday go to look was created using Elizabeth Arden Pure finish Mineral Tinted Moisturizer, along with color eye shadow in shimmering copper, beliini, and truffle were utilized to create that sun kissed look. Along with the ceramide cream blush in pink and ceramide ulta lipstick in Cameo to finish off the beautiful look.

Craves: Prabal Gurung for Target

Welp..with storm Nemo coming full force hitting NYC this weekend, what is a girl to do? What about planning your Sunday morning on line and online, for the new Prabal Gurung and Target collaboration. Great idea says everyone!  I’m always up for high end designers who bring their style to those of us that either refuse to spend their hard earned cash on clothes or can’t afford their celebrity price tags.

With so much color and lovely prints Prabal Gurung is giving fashionistas everywhere heart palpitations, not to mention prices that are budgetnista friendly. So lets talk about my favorites and items that I think will sell out rather quickly.

The Shoes

I love all the shoes while I can’t wear them all (wedges, flats and platforms preferred) they are all reasonable priced with amazing colors to boot here they are.

The Dresses

Off the back of the last designer collaboration one the biggest complaints were that the dresses weren’t curvy girl friendly this time around all of the dresses are A-line, a flattering type for all woman.

That Jacket

There is only one in the collection and it’s leather. With the highest price point in the collection, it’s a worthy buy with a color that most don’t carry in their closet for outerwear.

Leather jacket in Dresden blue, $199.99; sleeveless tee in First Date print, $26.99; pleated skirt in Nolita print, $29.99

The Shirtdress

I’m in love with it and oh the many outfit options you can create with this beauty for sure this will probably be the first item to sell out.

Kerry Washington Dazzles at NAACP Image Awards

If you haven’t heard of Olivia Pope where have you been under a rock?! Though I myself haven’t watched a single episode of Scandal to date (don’t kill me) I definitely know about the darling damsal. She has been doing her thing stylistically for a long time and turned it on once again for the NAACP Image Awards this past weekend; where Kerry took home the Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series Award for her role in SCANDAL; Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture Award for her role in DJANGO UNCHAINED; and the President’s Award, given in recognition of special achievement and exceptional public service. Got get it Ms. Washington!

kerry-washington-18

Kerry Washington who has been on a roll beauty and fashion wise for quite a long time can’t seem to get it wrong. For the festivities she donned a fabulous Oscar de la Renta Spring 2013 dress which melted my little fashion heart.

New-York-Fashion-Week-Oscar-de-la-Renta-Spring-2013-Collection-59

Now lets talk about her hair and makeup which I always love because she is always on point with both. She had a subtle smokey eye paired with a light pink lip that just paired so well with the dress.url

I was able to get the skinny on hair from celeb hairstylist Marcus Francis who utilized the amazing much raved about Carol’s Daughter Monoi line.

To get the look, Francis:

  • Blow dried the hair with a round brush, adding a few drops of Carol’s Daughter Monoi Oil Sacred Strengthening Serum to the ends.
  • Flat ironed the hair from roots to ends to seal in the shine, adding in a small pump of Carol’s Daughter Monoi Repairing Split End Sealer after flat ironing to lock in added moisture.
  • Sectioned out the top middle section, creating a clean part on either side of the head, then lightly teased a few sections at the front for height, and brushed using a Mason Pearson hair brush. Francis then blended the teased hair into the back of the head, keeping the sides clean and securing with two bobby pins underneath the hair on either side.
  • With a 1 1/4″ size curling iron, Francis curled the ends of medium-sized sections and held for three seconds for added movement, brushing out to soften and break up any tendency the hair had to curl.
  • Smoothed the hairline with a spritz of Carol’s Daughter Macadamia Heat Styling Hairspray on a toothbrush-like finishing tool. Finally, Francis sprayed the entire head and finished with a final half pump of Monoi Repairing Split End Sealer on the curled ends.

Queen Bey & King Jay At the 2013 Inauguration

You can’t help but to smile with glee and happiness for our president but to also bring in the Queen Bey to sing the Star Spangled Banner, and King Jay-Z who slayed many in his custom grey suit and Beyonce who dazzled in her black long flowing dress and bright colored tangerine manicure with emerald accessories to boot. Yes in true style they represented Brooklyn and New York in style with class.

Will the New Nicki Minaj Please Stand Up!

New Year 2013 and someone seems to have toned down their crazy costume antics at least for now. Nicki Minaj has been spotted at various events around town and dressing dare I say ” Normal” Her classic blond hair and snatched face is still in effect but she has seemed to tone down her look… maybe for the better. Personally I love the new looks still very Nicki-esque but  fashionable where someone can flip through a magazine and say I’m inspired and would love to even mimic it.

I would love for her wig game to get better though in recent photos the lace front has been rearing its ugly head more and more, Terrence Davidson has left the creative team which is so apparent. Need a new hairstylist I’d call Hadiiya Barbel she doesn’t make wigs she makes crowns for the likes of Wendy Williams, Mya, Eva Marcille, and Ashanti to name a few. I think she’s perfect for the role, what do you think?

Merli’s Picks: 5 Best Dressed and 2 Fashion Failures at the Emmy’s

This award season I was very disappointed in the dress options chosen by the talent… either that or the stylists are on strike because in my opinion it looked more like prom season doubled over.  Welp Whatever! Made my life choosing the top five  just that much easier as result.

Who were your picks for best dressed this year?

Maria Menounos warded off my fashion blues in this flowing frock

Ginnifer Goodwin seems to always get it right. She doesn’t look like she tries hard to look fabulous and simply pretty with edge.

Lara Spencer is giving me fierce here channeling a model in her one shoulder dress

Morena Baccarin is bringing the deep V back with this smokey grey cloud of sexy

Jeannie Mai knows what to do and barely misses. Though she is beautiful here I’ve seen her take more risk. I feel like she wears this to sleep so easy! But I still love my girl Jeannie from the block on the corner of Fab Street.

Two Fashion failures include:  Christine Baranski and almost Heidi Klum

Christine Baranski you had no business borrowing Beyonce’s dress. Don’t do that again!

I almost love this dress on Heidi Klum but I’m over the high slit situation that keeps taking place.

Rihanna Dazzles At VMA’s 2012

While Miss Merli was out at NYFW the VMA’s still went on, but Rihanna turned it up from head to toe literally. With a short black crop, a banging nail design and a dress that says Yup just like that! Rihanna hits gold again, she also won tons of awards so that also helps.
