Up Close and Personal With Taren Guy

The term “Nappy” what does it mean to you?

I feel like where was the word derived from, where did it come from.we know it was meant to be a negative term. Even though we have proud to be  naturals who come out

_DSC0075now and say “Happy to be nappy!” I feel like just thee, from the original intent of the word it makes you cringe for a reason because you feel it there is a stigma attached to it. It’s going to be hard to separate that at this point, while I can hear the girls say I’m happy to be nappy, when a guy says I love your nappy hair…. how about let me call my own hair nappy. Whether its contradictory or not its just the way it is.

Do you think that men have caught on to the natural hair movement or are they still pro perm hair?

I feel like they are catching on. I feel like they are a few who were already on even within the black community itself. A lot of people say the white guys they’ve always loved our hair. Most black guys have been a little slow to catch on but I do feel like its a different kind of black guy that appreciates it and its just what it is. They can be either very cultured… I don’t want to put a stereotype on “That Guy” but you know what I mean, like that guy I don’t want to say who is burning incense, creating music and painting. But seriously he is that guy into all that stuff. And then there is the other guy who is very industry, very pretentious, and its all about the video models and gucci and their appreciation (for us) is gone. Its just a different kind of guy and race has nothing to do with it.

What was your proudest “Natural” Moment?

I have two, my first one was when I did the big chop in the middle of my natural hair journey. It wasn’t to go natural but simply I’m getting rid of this long hair because its damaged and I’m ready to start fresh, and really take care of it;  the way I want to take care of it.  Just to make that decision was serious because I was very attached to my length, that was a big move for me. And the second time As my hair started growing not fretting over my curls being perfect cause that was definitely me. If you watched my videos pre-big chop it was all about the kinky curly custard, and define this, and this curl is out of place. The appreciation for my hair really grew after the big chop. So now I’m in a very carefree space and I love it. Those two are big for me.

Any tips or suggestions for the current naturals who are ready to go back to the “White Crack”?

Ooooh! Who are ready to go back? I feel like they didn’t go back (to natural) for the right reasons then. Those People who go natural make that decision because it is a trend its so shallow that any little thing will make them go back (to natural) but when you do it for a deeper reason  and more like self acceptance and I don’t care I want to be me then you’ll stay. Its just as simple as that, cause a lot of people like to jump on bandwagons and then they just jump right off.

Wow!

Wow!

After our interview Taren would face a sold out crowd at The Harlem School of the Arts, packed with naturals from all over, even international as far as London. They were all ready to hear the amazing panel that included, Dickey Founder and Creative Director of Hair Rules and Michaela Angela Davis, Image Activist and Editorial Brand Manager at BET, Nakesha Smith youtube natural hair vlogger, as well as other naturals hand-picked from the audience.

The Panel

The Panel Taren, Dickey, Michaela, Nakeisha, and three audience members

It was a sight to be seen over a hundred natural haired women and there were a handful of men as well all celebrating and learning about who we are… naturally.

The crowd was packed out. Now that's love.

Kerry Washington Dazzles at NAACP Image Awards

If you haven’t heard of Olivia Pope where have you been under a rock?! Though I myself haven’t watched a single episode of Scandal to date (don’t kill me) I definitely know about the darling damsal. She has been doing her thing stylistically for a long time and turned it on once again for the NAACP Image Awards this past weekend; where Kerry took home the Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series Award for her role in SCANDAL; Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture Award for her role in DJANGO UNCHAINED; and the President’s Award, given in recognition of special achievement and exceptional public service. Got get it Ms. Washington!

Kerry Washington who has been on a roll beauty and fashion wise for quite a long time can’t seem to get it wrong. For the festivities she donned a fabulous Oscar de la Renta Spring 2013 dress which melted my little fashion heart.

Now lets talk about her hair and makeup which I always love because she is always on point with both. She had a subtle smokey eye paired with a light pink lip that just paired so well with the dress.url

I was able to get the skinny on hair from celeb hairstylist Marcus Francis who utilized the amazing much raved about Carol’s Daughter Monoi line.

To get the look, Francis:

  • Blow dried the hair with a round brush, adding a few drops of Carol’s Daughter Monoi Oil Sacred Strengthening Serum to the ends.
  • Flat ironed the hair from roots to ends to seal in the shine, adding in a small pump of Carol’s Daughter Monoi Repairing Split End Sealer after flat ironing to lock in added moisture.
  • Sectioned out the top middle section, creating a clean part on either side of the head, then lightly teased a few sections at the front for height, and brushed using a Mason Pearson hair brush. Francis then blended the teased hair into the back of the head, keeping the sides clean and securing with two bobby pins underneath the hair on either side.
  • With a 1 1/4″ size curling iron, Francis curled the ends of medium-sized sections and held for three seconds for added movement, brushing out to soften and break up any tendency the hair had to curl.
  • Smoothed the hairline with a spritz of Carol’s Daughter Macadamia Heat Styling Hairspray on a toothbrush-like finishing tool. Finally, Francis sprayed the entire head and finished with a final half pump of Monoi Repairing Split End Sealer on the curled ends.

Will the New Nicki Minaj Please Stand Up!

New Year 2013 and someone seems to have toned down their crazy costume antics at least for now. Nicki Minaj has been spotted at various events around town and dressing dare I say ” Normal” Her classic blond hair and snatched face is still in effect but she has seemed to tone down her look… maybe for the better. Personally I love the new looks still very Nicki-esque but  fashionable where someone can flip through a magazine and say I’m inspired and would love to even mimic it.

I would love for her wig game to get better though in recent photos the lace front has been rearing its ugly head more and more, Terrence Davidson has left the creative team which is so apparent. Need a new hairstylist I’d call Hadiiya Barbel she doesn’t make wigs she makes crowns for the likes of Wendy Williams, Mya, Eva Marcille, and Ashanti to name a few. I think she’s perfect for the role, what do you think?

Keith Campbell’s “Decide to Be Beautiful”

NEW YORK, NY - SEPTEMBER 07: Celebrity hair s...

On behalf of  Blinging Beauty I had the pleasure of going to celeb hairstylist Keith Campbell‘s book signing for his new book Decide to Be Beautiful where he cut it up literally and the most stylish people came together to celebrate him. The event took place at the Limelight Shops in Manhattan at Modelista a modern boutique where I fell in complete love with the clothing and accessories. Also in attendance were my fave singers Melanie Fiona, Chrisette Michelle and Bridget Kelly all three ladies looked beautiful in all of their personal styles. When asked about the design and inspiration behind the  book “Decide to be Beautiful” Keith shared that in an industry where everyone takes things to seriously he wanted to share his inspiration and art in a super light, super fun, and creative way. Another question asked was about the emergence of natural hair and how it effects Keith’s business, for Mr. Campbell it hasn’t effected his business at all. He gets in there and colors, twists and gets the clients hair to healthy, because at the end of the day that’s what it’s about. Everyone has their own hair soul and no two natural haired women are the same so helping them get to their hair truth is his goal. I love that! Make sure to go support and pick up his book.
